 HAZARDOUS MATERIALS PROHIBITION

SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 7 

 

1. Purpose

 

Operators are hereby informed that ICAO Technical Instructions prohibits the transport by air of lithium batteries that:  

  • Have been damaged,
  • Have been identified by the manufacturer as being defective for safety reasons, or
  • Have the potential of producing a dangerous evolution of heat, fire, or short circuit (e.g., those being returned to the manufacturer for safety reasons)

 

Samsung Corporation has recalled the Galaxy Note 7 due to a defect in the battery. This was the cause of fires resulting from the overheating of the battery while charging or during operation.

 

 

2. Compliance

 

Effective immediately the following will apply with respect to the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices: 

 

  1. A.All Operators are hereby prohibited from transporting or offering for air transportation a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 device, by either carrying it on passenger’person or in carry-on baggage when boarding an aircraft, placing the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 device in checked baggage, or shipping it via air as cargo  

 

  1. B.All Air Operators are required to alert passengers to the prohibition against air transport of a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 device, in particular, immediately prior to boarding and to deny boarding to a passenger in possession of a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 device unless and until the passenger divests his or herself and his or her baggage, including carry-on and checked baggage, of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 device. 

 

  1. C.persons who inadvertently bring a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 device onto an

 

 aircraft must immediately power off the device, do not use or charge the device while aboard the aircraft, protect the device from accidental activation, including disabling any features that may turn on the device, such as alarm clocks, and keep the device on their person and not in the overhead compartment, seat back pocket, nor in any carry-on baggage, for the duration of the flight. 

 

  1. D.

 

3. Jurisdiction

 

This circular is issued pursuant to section 11 of the Civil Aviation Act of each OECS State and Regulation 78 of the Civil Aviation Regulations.

 

4. Coming in force

 

This directive comes into force immediately upon publication.
